Lia Rodrigues was born in 1956 in São Paulo, where she studied classical ballet and History at the University of São Paulo (USP).
Having participated in the contemporary dance movement in São Paulo, in the 70s, she was a part of the Compagnie Maguy Marin/France from 1980 to 1982. Upon coming back to Brazil, she created Lia Rodrigues Companhia de Danças (Lia Rodrigues Dance Company) in 1990, in Rio de Janeiro, with activities throughout the year, from classes to rehearsals, research and creation, with performances in Brazil and internationally.
In 1992, she created – and directed for 14 years – the most important dance festival of Rio de Janeiro, the Panorama Dance Festival . Since 2004 her Company has developed artistic and pedagogical actions in the Maré slums, in Rio de Janeiro, in partnership with Redes de Desenvolvimento da Maré. From that partnership was born the Centro de Artes da Maré (Maré Arts Center), open to the public since 2009 and Escola Livre de Danças da Maré (Free Dance School of Maré), which opened its doors in October 2011.
During her more than 40 years of professional activity, choreographer Rodrigues combines formation and artistic creation, teaching classes, workshops and seminars.
