About

The popular Playmakers series returns to the Great Southern in 2016, and this year we’re showcasing local luthiers (string instrument makers) who are influencing craftsmanship around the world.

Join us for a program of events offering the opportunity to immerse yourself in instrument making of all types, see instrument demonstrations, join discussions or simply sit back and sample a selection of locally-sourced food and wine as you listen to a cast of Playmakers in concert across the weekend.

Meet and Greet

Meet and Greet

Join the opening party to welcome artisans and artists to 2016 Playmakers with an informal Meet and Greet concert.

A cast of Playmakers, including musicians from Bluegrass Parkway and Ten Cent Shooters along with a host of other Western Australian performers, all come together for a laid back jam session to get the Playmakers weekend started in celebratory style.

Make It, Play It

Make It, Play It

This is your chance to get hands on with this year’s Playmakers theme of Home Made, Home Played.

Make It immerses you in all manner of instrument making demonstrations. See a variety of woods from around Australia and the world, being shaped, carved, bent, scraped, chiselled, inlaid, braced, repaired, voiced, polished, joined or set up to create musical instruments. Be there as the finishing touches are made and hear the very first joyful tones of the specially commissioned Great Southern Ukulele.

As part of Play It, the Kalyenup Foyer comes alive with wood and instrument displays. Strum, pick, handle or simply marvel at a wide collection of fine handmade instruments from Albany and beyond.
